“I’ve got mine, you get yours.”
An old New Yorker Magazine cartoon depicted a huge sanitation worker grinning maniacally as he was about to toss an empty garbage can to the curb in front of an apartment building, shattering the pre-dawn silence. The caption read, “The sort of thing that brings joy to the ashman’s black heart.”
I’ve often thought of that cartoon as I lay in bed early in the morning after being awakened by the sanitation workers of the Yonkers Public Works Department, who come by three days a week at about 6:30 a.m. to collect garbage and recycling. I recently moved to a new address, and found that the collection started an hour earlier than it had at my old address, just blocks away.

YONKERS, NY -- February 19, 2014 -- The Yonkers Board of Education (YBoE) Trustees Special Meeting of Wednesday, February 19, 2014, was much anticipated and well attended. Many seemed to know dribs and drabs of what was expected to happen. The gathered huddled among associates of like mind and political agenda. There was a sense of foreboding and another that seemed to catapult others to a wake. YBoE Trustee President Dr. Nader Sayegh, Esq.,(Pictured left) broke the spell by suggesting the board go into executive session for approximately 15 minutes to discuss a personnel issue. After a 6 for and 2 against vote, the YBoE Trustees exited the 28 Wells 4th Floor Conference room to a different gathering spot. Their collective exit permitted more gossip to enthrall the inquisitive crowd.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Eliot Engel (New York-16) urges Metro-North to quickly adopt new safety recommendations from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) in the wake of the deadly train derailment in his Congressional District on December 1.
The five-page NTSB report advises Metro-North to install inward- and outward-facing audio and image recorders, as well as speed restriction signs along key points to alert engineers they are approaching an area where speed must be reduced.
