HARTSDALE, NY — October 11, 2014 — The plot of a lion cub who lived at the Plaza Hotel with a Russian princess, the first and largest pet mausoleum ever constructed, the first War Dog Memorial created for canines that served in wartime, and grave sites of pets belonging to Mariah Carey, Irene Castle and Gene Krupa are a few of the sites you’ll visit at Hartsdale Pet Cemetery’s History Day Walking Tour on Saturday, October 18, beginning at 1 pm.
The tour is open free to the public and will be held rain or shine. All participants will receive a complimentary copy of The Peaceable Kingdom in Hartsdale signed by the author, Edward C. Martin, III, a Hartsdale Pet Cemetery vice president. The tour will begin at the cemetery’s main entrance located at 75 North Central Park Avenue in Hartsdale.
Hartsdale Pet Cemetery’s Historian Mary Thurston will lead the tour. An internationally recognized anthropologist and animal historian, she was responsible for completing Hartsdale’s successful application to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2012. Hartsdale’s War Dog Memorial is a landmark in Westchester County and is included in the Westchester County Office of Tourism’s website.
The Hartsdale Pet Cemetery is America’s first pet grounds established in 1896. It is the only pet cemetery listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is ranked as the best pet cemetery in the world. It is a certified National Wildlife Habitat.
