Yonkers Firefighter Dan Colon Saves the Life of Elderly Restaurant Patron By HEZI ARIS
YONKERS, NY -- March 15, 2013 -- It is Friday night, March 15, 2013. Off-duty Yonkers Firefighter Dan Colon is enjoying the company of his wife over a repast at the Outbank Steakhouse on Central Avenue when he recognizes an elderly woman near where they where seated in distress. The woman was choking. Without a second of hesitation, Firefighter Colon, a Certified First Responder, sprang into action. After ascertaining 911 had been called, he began performing abdominal thrusts on the choking patient. After several abdominal thrusts, the obstruction causing her to choke was dislodged, expelled, and she began to again breather normally. A proud and successful moment indeed! Shortly thereafter, Yonkers Fire Department Squad 11 arrived at the scene, attended to the woman and awaited Empress EMS ambulance to arrive before returning to the firehouse.
Please feel free to retort to my comments, I love sharing and listening both.

You are correct, I did mean hire. First there are not 500 members to begin with closer to 430 but that doesn't make any difference since only 4 members and 1 big fire truck respond to most medical calls. If Emprees already responds to 100% of medical calls- their words not mine- than they are already at their billing maximum so any additional hires on their part would only cut into their profit.

As far as better trained, I think that at this point, all or many fire brigade members not only have credentials, but a whole lotta experience due to the fact that they are a career employee and will continue to improve and respond to these calls.
Private ems companies employees come and go like the wind with whatever amount of experience that they have and the bottom line in perspective from management and not yonkers patient care.
Not an insult, just life.

Paramedic services will bill the patient and the city if the brigades do not respond anymore, they did it in the past. You know it is said those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it.
But in a monetary outlook, we will pay twice over if the brigades are not utilized, just like before they did ems calls, Empress blackmailed the city in to paying them a fee for providing service and billing patients also. The way I see it is they never took away or added medic units either way. In fact they may have reduced the units in yonkers because the brigades were providing coverage.

Correct, at a minimum. Not 500 members. Plus more EMTs and Paramedics would be cheaper than the 500 responding in the big fire trucks. I don't undertstand the "more they higher they higher the less thry profit" statement. Did you mean "hire"?

I think what threesides to the truth is getting at is that the fire brigades are needed at a minimum for fire protection so utilizing them for medical runs is a cost efficient usage of taxpayer dollars. Hiring more EMT's and paramedics would be wonderful but it is a for profit company and the more they higher the less they profit.

Why not reduce the expensive fire brigade and replace them with more higher trained EMTs and Paramedics?
Posted by: The Truth | March 20, 2013 at 21:41
As usual, you are correct (again!)
Thank you for playing.

Hello Mr. Truth, as you know, there are usually three sides to truth. One, fire brigades will exist incertain parts of the city to meet minimum fire brigade response times. Two, why not use them to be the first on scene to medical calls due to their proximity in the city. Three, yes, it serves their purpose, my purpose and everyone elses purpose because they will exist in some shape or form, why not use em' to their full potential if the cost is there already.
I am biased as it proved an asset for one of my family members, therefore, all threes sides i beleive?

some many thoughtful and useful ideas from couch gods that have everything figured out, save this, cut that, it's all so easy just sitting on your ass with great ideas...spanos are on the new YFD candidate list so the b.s. on this site can now subside..mayor has more work to do and hire more spanos.

I think we all know what this about. Their runs were way down years ago, not nearly as many fires as in the past. So they needed work to justify their manpower. Now more than half of their assignments are medical runs. So they are deathly afraid of losing them. Also does it make sense to send those huge trucks on all of those assignments? No. But they will never be honest as to their motivation.
Posted by: The Truth | March 19, 2013 at 20:48
They are called First Responders why? Because they are the first to respond. And it doesn't appear that anyone or any EMS company can beat their record. So stop trying! Congratulations Mr. Colon. Job well done as usual.

If we don't have a foiafighta in every Outback!
You already used this line, in the last letter you wrote for the Mayor, after another citizen was saved at LaLanterna. Make sure you come up with something better this time, like,"Thankfully there are people in Yonkers who care about others".
Better yet, let him be silent, and thought the fool instead speaking and not leaving a doubt. Thank you to rescuer, who was there for this family.

Congrats FF Colon. Great job! Saving this elderly citizen is a reflection of good training and a dedicated professional. It’s difficult to believe there are still citizens in this city that think that Mike the Magnificent’s attack on the FF union is anything but political payback. Here’s a Mayor who doesn’t give a good shit about the everyday Yonkers resident. He doesn’t care what happens to the next citizen who requires emergency service to survive. He is only concerned with how much he and his clan can get out of the city coffers before the voters wake up. Just remember, if any of their crew requires emergency service, they have all the phone numbers they need for SPECIAL treatment.

Folkerts is a bag of shit just like Mike Spano!
Posted by: Folkerts and Spano Suck | March 18, 2013 at 03:32
Leave folkerts alone. Are u crazy. Folkerts is a weasel. Ask him how his wife is doing over in city hall. Ask George kielb about folkerts. John folkerts is thee biggest piece of shit on the Yonkers Fire Department. It is comical that Folkerts is in charge of training. Him and Spano can both go fuck themselves. John folkerts is worried about one person and only one person and that's folkerts. Spano didn't want to promote guys who abuse sl and he shouldn't until he found out his boy folkerts is one of the Top Ten SL abusers on the job. Folkerts was a horrible FF and he I'd an even worse officer ... Tell everyone how you made a hot dog stand on fire in Cross County a 2nd alarm job from 5 blocks away , that's over 50 guys responding. Lol. Than tell us how you slide out a window 4 stories up w no gloves on during training , or the time ohhhhh forget it ill be here all night telling stories. P.S. long live Hugh Fox. Ha ha Johnny boy

It's not Folkerts fault that Spano is a backstabbing liar.

How's Johnny Folkert's dealing with the egg on his face and the Spano double cross?

That was what is called "sarcasm". Is your name Sheldon by any chance?
Posted by: Colon for Mayor | March 17, 2013 at 16:16
Yes yonkers ff do a great job but lets face it if Mr Colon was not in the Y.F.D or Y.P.D this would have never have got the press it did.

What press conference? It wasn't long ago that Firefighters delivered a baby and the mayor gave the Empress employees a proclamation for delivering the baby. The parents were so pissed off at the mayor that they contacted the firefighters union and appeared in the union"s commercial with their baby. Don't hold you breath waiting for this mayor to recognize anything the firefighters do no matter what it is.
